2006年2月24日美国《科学》杂志发表了以南京大学天文系教授戴子高为第一作者和通讯作者的四位中美科学家合作完成的研究成果，他们在题为《合并后毫秒脉冲星的X射线耀变》的论文中首次提出了来自宇宙伽马射线暴的X射线耀变新机制，成功地解释了这一研究领域所有的观测现象。该理论克服了传统的致密双星合并模型在解释观测现象时遇到的困难，并预言了与传统模型不同的引力波辐射强度和中微子辐射强度，具有重要的科学意义。
