How Much Drought Can a Forest Take?     Drought  Forest       font style='font-size:12px;'> 2017/2/16
Why do some trees die in a drought and others don’t? And how can we predict where trees are most likely to die in future droughts?Scientists from the University of California, Davis, and colleagues ex...
A new study has found that trees worldwide develop thicker bark when they live in fire-prone areas. The findings suggest that bark thickness could help predict which forests and savannas will survive ...
Scientists create ice storms to study nature's chilly response     Scientists  create ice storms  nature's chilly       font style='font-size:12px;'> 2016/12/13
Anyone who has ever driven in freezing rain knows all too well the potential hazards of an ice storm. These powerful winter weather events are also capable of catastrophic ecological and socio-economi...

Forest die-offs ricochet to distant ecosystems     Forest die-offs  distant  ecosystems       font style='font-size:12px;'> 2016/11/29
Major forest die-offs due to drought, heat, beetle infestations or deforestation could have consequences far beyond the local landscape, results from a new study show.According to a paper published to...

Earlier snowmelt carries drastic consequences for forests     snowmelt  drastic consequences  forests       font style='font-size:12px;'> 2016/8/11
Earlier snowmelt periods associated with a warming climate may hinder subalpine forest regulation of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), according to the results of a new University of Colorado Boulder ...
A legacy of acid rain has acidified forest soils throughout the northeastern US, lowering the growth rate of trees. In an attempt to mitigate this trend, in 1999 scientists added calcium to an experim...
China’s sweeping program to restore forests across the country is working. The vast destruction of China’s forests, leveled after decades of logging, floods and conversion to farmland, has become...
New insights into the seasonality of Amazon's evergreen forests     seasonality  Amazon  evergreen forests       font style='font-size:12px;'> 2016/3/2
Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. In the Amazon, the opposite is true: without truly seeing the trees, you can't "see" the forest and understand the seasonal patterns of photosynthesis...
Increasing drought threatens almost all U.S. forests     Increasing drought  U.S.  forests       font style='font-size:12px;'> 2016/2/23
Forests nationwide are feeling the heat from increasing drought and climate change, according to a new study by scientists from 14 research institutions. "Over the last two decades, warming temperatu...
A new study assessing the influence of species diversity of canopy trees on the amount of ozone precursors a forest emits suggests that atmospheric chemistry models in use now may underestimate the im...
