氧气还原、氧气析出以及氢气析出等小分子电催化反应是锌空气电池、锂空气电池、燃料电池以及电化学分解水制氢等能量存储与转换技术的核心反应，然而它们均是动力学慢反应，都需要使用催化剂来加速它们的反应，从而提高存储和转换效率。在单一催化剂上实现多功能电催化一直是该领域研究的热点和重点，这对于降低上述能量存储与转换器件结构的复杂性、大幅度提高性能，促进它们的产业化都具有重要意义。
